the wisdom of cowboy gil

1989...he was 26...she was 20. little did they know that in one year, they would meet...fall in love...get married...have kids...stay married. the same year, "parenthood" starring steve martin and a bunch of other big and about to be big stars came out. it was funny, and you could see the wisdom in it...even from a pre-parenthing perspective. little did we know how wise it was.

[Gil has been complaining about his complicated life; Grandma wanders into the room] Grandma: You know, when I was nineteen, Grandpa took me on a roller coaster.
Gil: Oh?
Grandma: Up, down, up, down. Oh, what a ride!
Gil: What a great story.
Grandma: I always wanted
to go again. You know, it was just so interesting to me that a ride could make me so frightened, so scared, so sick, so excited, and so thrilled all together! Some didn't like it. They went on the merry-go-round. That just goes around. Nothing. I like the roller coaster. You get more out of it.

fast forward 18 years...married. two kids. two dogs. two mortgages. two cars. still just the 24 hours in a day. the real life version of california screamin' (a big roller coaster in disneyland).

crazy? yes

but we're loving it and each other. more every day.

so this is our chronicle of love, marriage, kids, dogs, etc. hopefully a way to 'stay in touch' with what's happening in our lives (should you be interested), and for us to have as a travel journal of sorts.

"After seven years of marriage, I'm sure of two things - - first, never wallpaper together, and second, you'll need two bathrooms...both for her. The rest is a mystery, but a mystery I love to be involved in." - Dennis Miller

Great Post Jacqui! I especially love the parallel with "Parenthood". We also saw that movie either right before or close after we got married (pre-children) and there is so much truth in it. So many of us are on a roller coaster right now. Some of us like the adventure and some of us are just holding on for dear life.

Thank you for allowing my family to be aprt of your family's life. We love the Crockett family and will enjoy riding the many roller coasters this season throws our way WITH you. This community we are growing is becoming more and more precious to us each day. I also LOVE our agreement to focus on family first! I think good things are ahead for each of us as individuals, as families and as a community. I did not say it would be an easy road, but I think a lot of good will come out of it. Love you guys!!!

One of my favorite lines in Parenthood is right after that scene:

Karen: I happen to LIKE the roller coaster, okay? As far as I'm concerned, your grandmother is brilliant.
Gil: Yeah if she's so brilliant why is she sitting in our NEIGHBOR'S CAR?

LOL .. love that movie!

Loving me some Crockett's too! You guys are a bright spot in the Clontz's lives!

Great blog and, yes, Parenthood is one of my favorite movies. I'm with V-wannabe-Dale on loving the way Parenthood ended the movies deepest statements with something to show the Wise One's lack of omniscience: sitting in the wrong car, Keanu Reeve's "Whew!" and hair flip after he makes the comment about how you need a license to do anything serious but they'll let any "jerk" be a father.)

Beautiful blog. I just got a trial membership at .Mac last week and if I ever do a blog -- rather unlikely -- I imagine it'll look a lot like my Flickr account, basically just letting people who care about us see our family and try to stay close to us now that we are so far away from them now that we moved out to the middle of the Pacific Ocean!

Miss y'all. I loved watching Rich teaching John how to drum.

hey y'all...thanks for stopping by. we love each of you too.

the 'ear cleaner' scene is one of the classic moments of the movie

i still say 'it's good...it's shiny' (Kool said that)

and when the little boy runs around with the bucket on his head and Mary Steenburgen says "he likes to hit things with his head" and Rich Moranis says "you must be so proud"...LOVE IT!!!

welcome!

Whew, finally got a chance to stop by your new blog. Very cool idea...

Written stories and perceptions add another dimension to an already wonderful relationship between our families.

Looking forward to sharing them with y'all here...
